Chapter 12

It had been at least two months since I had seen Jeremiah and Eli in the restroom at Cassie Hunt’s elementary school. Since that time, I hadn’t seen or heard from any ghost, which relaxed my mind a little. Had it not been for that, along with my job at the Bay News, I would have still been questioning my sanity. As I sat at my desk at the Bay News office that day, I had a strange feeling something was about to happen. No one said or did anything to suggest that. I just had that feeling.

Just as I started to respond to emails, Wendy yelled out I had a phone call. Seeing the long list of emails I had to go through, I really didn’t feel like taking the call. Still, I didn’t want to miss out on a great story lead either.

“Hello, this is Jacob Lattimore,” I said. “How can I help you?”

“Hey babe, this is Monica.”

“Hey Monica, what’s going on?”

“Nothing really,” she said. “I was just calling to tell you that I’m about to go to Laurel.”

“For what?”

Monica really didn’t go into any details. “It’s just a family emergency,” she said.

“Okay, I understand. I just hope that everything is okay.”

“From what I was told, everything is fine,” she said. “It’s nothing to worry about.”

“Well if you say so. I guess I have no choice but to not worry. So, how has your morning been so far?”

“It’s been okay, I guess,” she said. “I wanted to ask you something though?”

“What is it? What do you want to ask me?”

“Well, for the past week, I’ve noticed a change in you.” she said.

“What kind of change?”

“Well, it’s nothing bad,” she said. “It’s just that you’ve seemed to be more at ease.”

“At ease? Well, I guess you are right.”

“So what’s going on?” she asked.

“Oh nothing. It’s just that I’ve just been able to sleep a little better, and I haven’t been under as much stress.”

“Well, I’m glad you are back to normal,” she said. “What are you doing right now?”

I looked around the office. “Nothing. I’m just sitting here at this computer, waiting for the day to hurry up and end. So, are you going to be gone when I get home today?”

“Yeah, I’m about to leave right now and go home and pack,” she said. “Then, I’ll be on my way to Laurel.”

“Well, please be careful, and remember I love you.”

“I love you too and don’t you be a bad boy, because I got my eye on you. I’ll call you when I make it. Bye.”

I really didn’t know how I should have felt after getting off the phone with Monica. A part of me was upset that she would travel to Laurel for the weekend without me. I hated when she would travel by herself. The other part of me was relieved. I had determined that I needed some alone time to figure out the situation with Jeremiah and Eli.

Just as I went back to responding to emails, I smelled the sweet aroma of French vanilla.
